Google Memperkenalkan Android L

Announced today at Google's annual I/O developer conference, Android L Developer Preview will feature around 5,000 new APIs, but the big change is Google's new Material Design initiative. Material Design actually goes beyond Android L and represents a new look and feel for all of Google's platforms, extending from phones to tablets and to the Web and desktop. Introduced by Android chief, Sundar Pichai, as a "fresh, bold and new look," Android L adds shadows, subtle textures and bright colors to Android.

L includes minimalist buttons, and a shift from square icons to round ones, and a slight tweak to Google's system-wide Roboto font. There's also a new look Gmail app, and the Google keyboard and quick settings menu have been updated too. Notifications have been improved too, with more interactive access on the lock screen.

Full details of L's 5,000 new APIs will be announced closer to its release date later this year, but here's a sneak peek at some of them!

Material Design

The very first thing you’ll notice when you fire up Android L is its new UI paradigm, Material Design. As we mentioned in our coverage yesterday, this new UI is radically different from anything we’ve seen in Android thus far, and it manifests itself practically everywhere in Android.

L will include a built-in battery saver mode.

Android L will also come with a new "Extension Pack" that offers what Google claims are "PC gaming" capabilities on high-end smartphones and tablets by facilitating higher-fidelity graphics techniques such as tessellation and geometry shading in Android games. This should better capture the potential of powerful chips like NVIDIA's Tegra K1.

Project Volta

Project Volta is here, albeit in somewhat limited form. Google’s looking to improve battery life on Android devices, and Volta is the first real step towards making this happen. Volta is comprised of several new features, namely Battery Saver mode as well as the new Battery Historian UI.

Battery Saver

Battery Saver mode works exactly as you would expect. It allows you to reduce device performance and screen brightness when enabled. This has the immediately noticeable effect of reducing the UI’s frame rate, severely limiting animations, and lowering screen brightness.

Battery Saver mode can be configured to automatically turn itself on when you reach a certain battery level–either 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, or always on. And as you would expect, plugging in your device temporarily disables Battery Saver mode. Unfortunately, however, the Battery Historian UI is not yet available at this time.
